How to Make and Sublimate Tumblers: Sublimation for Beginners

To make sublimation tumblers, you'll need a sublimation printer with sublimation ink, sublimation paper, heat-resistant tape, sublimation tumblers, and either a heat press or a convection oven along with a tumbler wrap or silicone sleeve for the oven. Start by designing your artwork using graphic design software and print it on sublimation paper. Clean the tumbler's surface to remove any dust or oils, then cut out the printed design and wrap it around the tumbler, securing it with heat-resistant tape to ensure there are no wrinkles or bubbles.

What Is A Sublimation Tumbler?

A sublimation tumbler is a specially coated drinkware item designed for the sublimation printing process. This process allows for the transfer of high-quality, full-color images, designs, or text onto the tumbler's surface and  In the case of Joto we only use Premium Pearl Coating™

Do Sublimation Tumblers Come In Different Colors?

Sublimation tumblers typically come in a white or light-colored base, as these colors are ideal for the sublimation process. The white or light base allows the sublimation inks to transfer accurately and vibrantly, ensuring high-quality, full-color designs. However, there are some variations and additional options:

  • White Base: The most common color for sublimation tumblers is white, providing a neutral background that enhances the vibrancy of the transferred designs.

    • Light-Colored Bases: Some sublimation tumblers come in light pastel colors, which can still produce good results with the sublimation process. These are less common but can add a unique touch to the final product.

    • Special Coatings: Some tumblers have special coatings or finishes, such as glitter or holographic effects, which can add an extra layer of creativity to the designs.

    • Ombre or Gradient Designs: There are tumblers available with ombre or gradient backgrounds, which combine a light base suitable for sublimation with a stylish color transition effect.

Step by Step on how to Make Sublimation Tumbers

Step 1: Get or Prepare a Sublimation Design

      • Create or select a design using graphic design software that is suitable for sublimation printing.

Step 2: Print Your Sublimation Design

      • Print the design on sublimation paper using a sublimation printer with sublimation ink. Make sure the design is mirrored to transfer correctly onto the tumbler.

Step 3: Prepare Your Print and Tumbler for Sublimation

      • Clean the surface of the tumbler to remove any dust or oils.

      • Cut out the printed design and wrap it around the tumbler, securing it with heat-resistant tape to ensure there are no wrinkles or bubbles.

Step 4: Press Your Sublimation Print

Now it’s time to transfer your sublimation print onto the desired substrate. Follow these steps to ensure a successful transfer:

      • Preheat Your Heat Press: Set your heat press to the recommended temperature and allow it to fully preheat. This ensures consistent heat during the transfer process.

      • Prepare the Substrate: Place your substrate (e.g., t-shirt, mug, or coaster) on the heat press platen. Make sure it's clean and free of any debris that could affect the transfer.

      • Position the Print: Place the sublimation print face-down on the substrate. Secure it in place with Joto™ heat-resistant tape if necessary to prevent shifting.

      • Cover with Protective Sheet: Place a protective sheet (such as Teflon or parchment paper) over the sublimation print to protect both the print and the heat press.

      • Apply Heat and Pressure: Close the heat press and apply the recommended pressure for the specified amount of time. Ensure even pressure across the entire surface for optimal results.

      • Remove and Cool: Once the time is up, carefully open the heat press and remove the protective sheet and sublimation paper. Allow the substrate to cool before handling it.

      Convection Oven Methods

      Method 1: Shrink Wrap

      • Place the wrapped tumbler inside a shrink wrap sleeve and use a heat gun to shrink the wrap tightly around the tumbler.

      • Preheat the convection oven to 375°F (190°C).

      • Place the tumbler in the oven and bake for 5-6 minutes.

Be aware that different tumblers may require specific temperature and time settings. Always refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines and check the Joto Website for exact parameters to ensure the best results for your particular project.

      Method 2: Silicone Bands

      • Secure the design to the tumbler using silicone bands to hold it firmly in place.

      • Place the tumbler in the oven and bake for 5-6 minutes.

      Step 5: Show It Off!

      • Carefully remove the tumbler from the oven using heat-resistant gloves and allow it to cool.

      • Peel off the sublimation paper to reveal your design.

      • Your customized sublimation tumbler is now ready to be shown off and used!

      FAQs

What setting do you press on the tumbler for sublimation?

Press at 350 degrees F for 80-100 seconds with medium pressure. If printing a design that wraps around the tumbler, rotate the tumbler and press for another 80-100 seconds. Remove immediately from the press once finished and peel hot. Use caution as the item will be very hot.

Do you need special ink for sublimation tumblers?

You'll need a sublimation printer, sublimation paper, sublimation ink, a sublimation-friendly tumbler, heat-resistant tape, heat-resistant gloves, and a convection oven or heat press to transfer the design.

Can you sublimate on just part of a tumbler?

You can sublimate just a part of the tumbler, but you must use blank tumblers specifically designed for sublimation dye. There are many types of sublimation tumblers available! The 20 oz sublimation tumblers I picked have a clear lid and a metal straw, but there are also options with plastic straws if you prefer. Just ensure they have the correct sublimation or poly coating.

      How durable are sublimated tumblers?

Sublimation tumblers are stylish, durable, and customizable. They are an excellent way to express your unique personality while enjoying your favorite drinks. However, cleaning them may be a challenge, and you may end up damaging the design if you use the wrong cleaning method
